Poptropica is an online virtual world with millions of users, 40+ island quests to play, and more. In addition to the online world, Poptropica has also become a brand name for toys, books, DS games, mobile apps, and more. In this wiki, you can learn all about the characters, islands, items, and more that make up this whimsical world.
Poptropica was founded in 2007 by Pearson Education, Inc. The game was invented by the minds of Jeff Kinney, Jordan Leary, and a small team of other developers. Jeff Kinney originally was involved with one of Pearson's sites, FunBrain.com. His bestselling book series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, had started as an eBook on the site. According to an interview by Words on a Limb, Jeff came up with the idea of Poptropica while mowing his lawn.
At the time, Nickelodeon was developing their own virtual world, Nicktropolis (now known as NickClub). Poptropica was originally going to be named Poptropolis (which you may recognize as the 27th island), until Nicktropolis was announced and they had to change the name.
The concept of a Poptropican changed over development, first starting as a large eyed, rectangular and odd looking sketch. A nose was added, arms were deleted to leave floating hands. The nose was deleted, arms were added back, and every arm and body piece was loosely held together with a bit of buoyancy to give off a poppy vibe. Finally the Poptropican design we know and love was perfected.
Poptropica was released to the public in September 2007, with one island on the map - Early Poptropica Island. Early Poptropica was a pilot island, showing the possibilities of Poptropica, and how stories could be told with it.
The majority of Poptropica's early success can be attributed to FunBrain.com, while it quickly outgrew FunBrain after. FunBrain promoted the site, and still does, showing ads on the sidebar and inside games.
